The Dock Museum tells the social and industrial story of the people of Barrow, ensuring its significance as a major British shipbuilding and engineering centre.
The project saw the re-development of the Shipyard Town gallery and re-design of the entrance and reception to the museum. Audiovisual software was produced by Heritage Interactive
Redman Design were appointed to take the project to RIBA 4 and provide contact administration support to Westmorland and Furness Council during the delivery stage.
The new scheme mixes creative thinking with practical re-use of existing assets. With an aspirational brief but limited budget, this was a highly effective solution.
Large existing showcases were re-furbished and re-displayed to tell new stories and highlight key objects.
The historic ship models are retained and brought to life with new interactive exhibits that broaden the audience and increase their appeal for families.
New displays and an immersive audiovisual experience tell the story of Barrow’s history as a centre for submarine construction and the experiences of crews serving on submarines.
The completed gallery delivers a re-focused visitor experience, now designed to appeal to a wider audience. It makes good use of existing infrastructure to transform the gallery within a modest budget.
